What is Web3 Diplomacy
What is Web3
Web3 is most basically considered the future of the internet. The biggest difference between web2 and web3 is that data is decentralized, user-owned, and democratically driven. There is no single agreed-upon definition for web3. Below are two different definitions from two authoritative sources:
The Ethereum Foundation defines web3 as: “Web3 puts the power in the hands of individuals rather than corporations.”
Harvard Business Review (HBR) defines web3 as: Web3 is being touted as the future of the internet. The vision for this new, blockchain-based web includes cryptocurrencies, NFTs, DAOs, decentralized finance, and more. Not all web3 tech is the same. This is still an emerging field and often times web3 lumps together several technologies: including blockchain metaverse (both extended and VR)
How Web3 can be Applied to Diplomacy
Traditionally diplomatic and economic development activity has been reserved for the most wealthy in a society who can afford to travel, learn multiple languages, and often only communicate amongst other elites with the same privileges.
The People’s Accords provides an organized, accessible, and sophisticated community grants program for lowering the socio-economic barriers of diplomatic participation in an effort toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Citizen Diplomats will work together in an online environment toward a common goal - either implementing a project, coming up with ideas, or meeting with other Citizen Diplomats from around the world.
Web2 allows this to some extent, however, web3 technologies are the next step in trustworthy, enriching, and empathy-driven experiences online.
Example Framework:
The diagram below outlines a seven-step framework for a repeatable and scalable model framework for Web3 Diplomacy. The process can be repeated by the same community multiple times or it can be implemented at the same time in multiple locations. Blockchain allows for a tracked and transparent process of participation in this process around the world in a decentralized, democratic, fair, and secure.
